What You Will Need
So you’re going on your first hike and you’re wondering what to pack. Here is a good start for your typical day hike.
- Backpack to put all this stuff in.
- Water Bottle so that you stay hydrated on the trails and save the environment.
- Snacks for when you get hungry.
- First-Aid Kit in the event of an injury.
- Bug Spray to keep the critters away.
- Sunscreen to avoid getting burned.
- Flashlight for if it gets dark.
- Whistle to blow for help in case you get lost.
- Toilet Paper because you never know.
- Earbuds to listen to your tunes
- Chapstick because it will come in handy.
Not Necessary, but Nice to Have
- Hammock so you can relax when you get there.
- Knife because it can come in handy.
- Trekking Poles to help your footing and balance.
- Binoculars to take in the view.
- Watch to keep track of time.
- Hat to keep the sun off both your head and ears.
- Light Rain Jacket in case it starts raining.
What You Should Do
Here are a few tips before, during, and after your hike:
- Hydrate and Eat Something before you get started.
- Tell someone so you don’t return, so they will know to begin looking for you.
- Hike with a partner in case you get hurt.
- Check the weather so that you know what to expect.
- LNT-Leave No Trace. Leave only footprints. Take only memories.
- Bring a change of clothes so you don’t have to ride home stinking.
