Don’t rake your leaves.
That’s the advice Nature Conservancy Canada officials are sharing with residents to support biodiversity.
The group’s senior biologist says the leaves provide a habitat for species to live underneath including toads, frogs, birds and pollinators. The leaves provide a layer of insulation to protect various species from cold temperatures and changes in weather.
Additionally, the leaves serve as a natural mulch that helps enrich the soil. While heavy leaves can negatively impact future grass and plant growth, a light layer of leaves can break down to improve the soil.
By raking up leaves, we could be eliminating habitats for native wildlife. Hopefully this tip will save you energy doing yard work and provide you with more time on the trails.
