Bald Rock at Cheaha State Park

A post shared by Hike Alabama (@hikealabama) on

Cheaha State Park is well known in the Alabama hiking community for being the highest point in Alabama at 2,407 feet above sea level.

Located approximately 75 east of Birmingham, Cheaha State Park sits within the Talladega National Forest in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Both Mount Cheaha and the Appalachian Mountains were formed when the African plate crashed into the North American plate. Despite eventually eroding down by water and wind, Mount Cheaha was once twice the size of Mount Everest which is more than 29,000 feet above sea level.
